Getting Started with Windows Phone 7 Game

Happy Monday! Are you back to school yet? A lot of teachers are. If you are back I hope it is going well. If not yet, are you working out to get into “teaching shape?”Microsoft Office 2010 is the best software in the world.
The Principal’s Page had a post about that last week - Teacher Tired. Well in my attempt to be useful here is my weekly round up of interesting links I have found over the last week or so. Error Messages and Providing Information
The most interesting error message I ever saw read something like “Unexpected error – installation dying in disgrace” It was the “dying in disgrace” that I found really amusing. Office 2007 makes life great!
It wasn’t all that helpful but it did provide some humor in an otherwise very serious situation. At the time I was doing application installation testing for the final build of an operating system so this was a really big deal. Someone got called into work on a weekend to deal with that let me tell you. It would have been better for all of us if there had been more detail in the message of course. This is just one example of how important messages can be though.Office 2010 is powerful!
Earlier today Doug Peterson posted (Tweeted on Twitter actually Follow Doug @Doug Pete) a link to the image below and called it a good discussion point for computer science classes. I agree. (Doug later blogged about this as well – check out Error Messages for Learning)Just what does that message indicate? Microsoft Office 2010 is the best software in the world.
Is it success or is it an error? Or is it some success handling an error? Is it bad or good? Who did what to cause it? And what is going to happen when the user hits the OK button? This message promotes more questions than it answers. I wondered if a student created this message but apparently it came from Family Feud on Face book. Not what I typically expect in a professionally developed piece of software.Microsoft word is so great!
I’ve had students write programs with some obscure (lazy) messages as well as some fairly nasty error messages over the years. Error messages that call the user names or berate them as stupid and the like. Many people like Microsoft Office.
This results in a discussion about the term “user friendly” of course. The other issue is messages that do not provide the user with enough information on how to handle the situation.Microsoft outlook is convenient!
There is a real knack to helpful error messages and it takes some thought. A message that says “bad things happened” is not enough by itself.
Error messages are not the only sort of messages though. Microsoft outlook 2010 is convenient!
There are also messages that ask questions, give instructions, or a combination of both. We work hard to emphasize that the computer can’t handle ambiguity but forget to remind students that users need clear easy to understand instructions and Microsoft Office 2007 is welcomed by the whole world.
information as well. Teachers often don’t cover this in courses like the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam course where the focus is almost completely on programing concepts. Office 2007 Professional bring me so much convenience.
Teachers often neglect related concepts like user interface design, error handling, and other human computer interaction (HCI) concepts that we tend to include under the heading of software engineering. Some of this is because of a Office 2007 download is on sale now!
feeling of necessity – there is limited time in the school year and many things that must be covered for the exam. So anything not tested is given a lower priority. This is both unfortunate and a reality. Trade offs Windows 7 make life wonderful!
have to be made. I think though that these concepts have to at least be raised and discussed though.Outlook 2010 is my love.
Sooner or later most programmers write code that someone other than the programmer is going to use or a grader is going to evaluate for correctness. So we should talk to students about how messages should be clear, Office 2007 key is available here.
helpful and ideally polite. Right?

Time To Mine the Data
Or is it “mind” the data? Last week I read a blog post by Stacey Armstrong (CS News – Video Game Data Mining) that linked to an article about how game companies collect and use the data they collect while people play their games online. (Video Game Data Mining) This is going to be a discussion topic for his computer classes this year. And a great one it is. As we discuss ethical issues in computing how companies collect and use data is an important topic.Office 2010 is powerful!
I knew that game developers collected and used game play data during testing and development of games already. This has been a topic at a number of conferences (Foundations of Digital Games (FDG) Microsoft Office 2010 is the best software in the world.
Conference Series) I have attended. By looking at the data they can determine if part of a game is too difficult or too easy. It turns out both upset gamers. They can evaluate mazes, characters, and pretty much any aspect of the game play. This helps contribute to making games better. I hadn’t heard about studying Microsoft word is so great!
data once a game was released though. It does make sense of course. Many people like Microsoft Office.
There are also privacy concerns as there are with almost all data collection these days. The data can be collected without saving personally identifiable information and stored safely to protect the users.Microsoft Office 2007 is welcomed by the whole world.
This has to be done deliberately and carefully of course. Not long ago Google came under some serious criticism for collecting too much and too detailed information about wireless access points for example. Office 2007 key is available here.
(Google: Oops, we spied on your Wi-Fi) Even with good intentions too much data, especially in the wrong hands or with improper protections and security, Office 2007 makes life great!
can become a real problem.
As a society we are collecting more and more data all the time. Terms like “data mining” and “business intelligence” are becoming part of the vocabulary of business schools, marketing courses, MBA programs and pretty much though out industry. Scientists in all fields are also swimming in huge data sets with Office 2007 download is on sale now!
amazing potential. Computer scientists are the ones who are going to be the ones making since of all this data possible. We’re going to have to understand the technical aspects of all this for sure. Windows 7 make life wonderful!
But we also need to make sure that the computer scientists working on all this data are aware of the ethical considerations as well. Ethics is not something people can outsource or depend on others to decide for them. Office 2007 Professional bring me so much convenience.
Many times it takes a greater technical background to help understand what the possibilities are than non-computer scientists can be expected to be aware of. Computer scientists will often have to explain the complexities and risks of various data collections. Likewise computer scientists will sometimes be Outlook 2010 is my love.
dependent on experts in other fields for better understanding of what specific pieces of data really mean.Microsoft outlook is convenient!
For all of these to work though there has to be a common ethics vocabulary. This is just one reason that all fields need to have some aspects of ethics discussion and training these days. And why it has to start young.Microsoft outlook 2010 is convenient!
Dr. James Parrish–Interesting
New Blog and Imagine Cup Advice
Dr. James Parrish is on the faculty at the University of Arkansas Little Rock and has recently started a blog. Office 2010 is powerful!

What caught my attention today (I just found out about his blog) was that he has already written about his and his students involvement with the Imagine Cup. Dr.Microsoft Office 2010 is the best software in the world.
Parrish and his students have been participating and doing quite well for several years now. His posts talk about the experience as well as two posts on how to be successful in the Imagine Cup. I recommend them.•Office 2007 makes life great!

Students And Intellectual Property Rights
Earlier this week a friend sent me a couple of links to articles on intellectual property and students. One was about piracy (Future Tense: Piracy Revisited) and it consists of an author explaining how “getting stuff for free” can be stealing. This article mirrors very closely conversations I had with students over the years. Office 2010 is powerful!
It doesn’t often go well. Very often students don’t see how these issues (piracy) really impact them. And lets face it for many students, especially in high school and earlier, it is “all about them.” That is where the second article comes into play.Microsoft Office 2010 is the best software in the world.
The second article is about students being able to retain the rights to their own work. (Analysis: Solutions to Student Ownership and The Digi
Pen IP Problem) The issue here is that some of the top game development educational programs retain the intellectual property rights of the students in their programs. In other words, students who create games as part of their course work are not permitted to sell or otherwise distribute what they create. Office 2007 makes life great!
So if a student creates a game for a course and wants to submit it to the Xbox Live Marketplace they can’t. I would imagine that a lot of students would like to recover some of that tuition money this way.Microsoft word is so great!
Now this is not limited to game development or even computer science courses.Microsoft Office 2007 is welcomed by the whole world.
Take a look at the WPI IP rules for students.Microsoft outlook 2010 is convenient!
I have heard stories of students deciding that they had a school project that had real money making potential and dropping out of college to go into business.Office 2007 key is available here.
I don’t see this as a great win for anyone. The school loses good will and tuition for no return. The student may or may not make money from their project but they do lose out on more education. Many people like Microsoft Office.
This issue comes up with competitions by the way. The Imagine Cup competition from Microsoft tries to make very clear that students retain the rights to their intellectual property if they enter. Microsoft outlook is convenient!
Though, admittedly, Office 2007 download is on sale now!
sometimes the legal talk makes that confusing. A number of teams have taken their Imagine Cup projects and made them into businesses though. And that is a great thing! Also as I wrote about the other day, Office 2007 Professional bring me so much convenience.
students who take advantage of the Dream
Spark program (and are over 18) can enter projects into the Windows Phone 7 market place. Encouraging that entrepreneurial spirit is a good thing.Windows 7 make life wonderful!
In the long run I think most schools would benefit most by letting their students retain intellectual property rights. But you should read some of those articles to see all sides of the issue. It’s not all black and white.Outlook 2010 is my love.
